Leadership

As Sheriff, Dustin provides leadership for approximately 150 employees in four divisions: law enforcement, corrections, court security & emergency management. Dustin is the only candidate for Sheriff with leadership experience in all four divisions. Dustin believes that the Office of Sheriff should represent all people living in and visiting Champaign County equally, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability or political affiliation.

Some of Dustin's leadership principles include:

  • Facilitate an environment where employees feel respected, needed and supported.

  • Disregard the “this is how we’ve always done it” mentality.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to find alternatives to incarceration for those who don't pose a safety risk to the community and who might benefit more from community alternatives.

  • Provide adequate facilities and programs for inmates that do have to be incarcerated.

  • Collaborate with state legislators for legislation that makes sense.

  • Incorporate proactive policing into daily operations.

  • Collaborate with community groups and stakeholders to combat community problems.

  • Facilitate and maintain a diverse and all-inclusive environment at the Sheriff's Office.

Dustin realizes that while some municipalities in Champaign County have their own unique issues, it takes a community to tackle these challenges and collaborates frequently with community leaders and other elected officials to help address them.
